The association
The Society of Friends of the Basque Museum or SAMB, was created in 1956 to contribute to the influence of the Museum. It brings together people interested in Basque culture and heritage.
It organizes various events such as conferences and Museum tours open to all by reservation and, for its members, special guided tours of the Museum’s exhibitions and themed cultural outings.
It publishes a biannual journal, le Bulletin du Musée Basque, or BMB, the first issue of which appeared in 1924.
The SAMB membership card provides free access to the Museum all year round. Members also receive regular updates on association activities via the Gogoan newsletter (in French).
SAMB participates in enriching the Museum’s collections through purchases made possible by tax-deductible donations.
The association was recognized as a public utility organization by decree of March 5, 2008 (as published in the Official Journal of March 7, 2008). This status facilitates partnerships and tax-deductible donations.
Since 2024, it has also been recognized as an American nonprofit organization through its collaboration with Myriad USA allowing people who itemize their income tax returns for the United States (or receive Individual Retirement Account payments) to get a U.S. tax deduction for donations.
Partnerships
SAMB is supported by the City of Bayonne. Its links with the Basque Museum are enshrined in a framework agreement concluded with the joint union that manages the Museum. The association is a partner of the Basque Cultural Institute (Euskal Kultur Erakundea), of the Society of Basque Studies (Eusko Ikaskuntza). SAMB is also a member of the French Federation of Museum Friends Societies (FFSAM).
The association is also supported by several companies based in the Basque Country.
